This is the first book that explains natural disasters in Malaysia, including the most common natural disasters, natural disaster records, natural disaster resilient technology for both buildings and infrastructures. The chapters are written based on documentation analysis on types of natural disasters and suitable technologies that may be adopted in Malaysia’s built environment.

The book is structured to guide the reader through the introduction of specific natural disasters, such as tropical cyclones, earthquakes, tsunamis, landslides, sinkholes and floods. This book covers how natural disasters can cause serious disruption to the functioning of a community and result in human, economic, or environmental losses that exceed the ability of the affected community to use their own resources.  A detailed explanation and analysis provides a better understanding of the potential areas prone to natural disasters. Knowledge of current natural disaster resilient technologies for both buildings and infrastructures that can be adopted in Malaysia’s built environment can contribute ideas for designers when designing for areas prone to natural disasters. It should be incorporated early into the project planning and design process in order to make design and material selection in accordance with the integrated “whole building approach”. On top on that, the reader can apply this knowledge in the decision-making process, and specific consideration can be given to any developments in that area.

The book is aimed for built environment and engineering students in Malaysian public and private universities. Both undergraduates as well as diploma students can use this book to expand their knowledge about natural disaster resilient technologies that can be adopted in Malaysia. The knowledge contained in this book has the promise of minimizing risk factors and facilitate sustainable development. Besides that, this book introduces the most successful approach to mitigating losses of life and property is by designing disaster-resistant buildings and infrastructures.
