Malaysian courtrooms are bilingual in a fairly unusual sense: both Malay and English have de jure standing. This situation reflects to some extent multilingualism of the surrounding society that has evolved under the influence of the official policy over the last two decade of shifting the language of the legal system from English to Malay.
