Royal Professor Ungku A. Aziz:The Renaissance Man is a collection of essays by essentially former colleagues and subordinates in attempting to provide a canvas of a man who has been described as a polymath and a dominant personality in the intellectual and cultural life of our beloved country Malaysia. Royal Professor Ungku A. Aziz has had a significant effect, since the decade of the fifties, on the growth and development of the nation in general and the University of Malaya in particular. The term The Renaissance Man is a most befitting and appropriate description of him who has multidimensional and varied interests. Royal Professor Ungku A. Aziz is well known for his Sarong Index attached to the Poverty and Rural Development in Malaysia. He explained the emergence and roots of poverty and how exploitation was the key to the problem and that market reform is essential to overcome the poverty problem. His relentless work on rural poverty and his study of the deleterious effects of fragmentation of estates established his reputation as a scholar. He strongly believes that development programmes must be sincere so that poverty can be eliminated as described in his pantun:
Kelapa puan di dalam jalur,
Kelapa jantan di buat titian;
Usaha pembangunan hendaklah jujur,
Supaya kemiskinan dapat dihapuskan.
